Plant pathology is a very important area of plant sciences because of its key role in sustainability of crop production and productivity. ![]() Through our Extension service we maintain our commitment to Kentucky’s growers by investigating both traditional and modern approaches to disease control, including pioneering the use of biotechnology to diagnose and treat diseases more effectively. In addition, the department attracts many postdoctoral scholars and renowned visiting scientists.Ī vital part of the department’s mission is serving the practical needs of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Mehl participates in collaborative and interdisciplinary projects with other Tidewater AREC faculty, campus-based and other Virginia Tech AREC faculty, researchers at other universities. Our intensive graduate program fosters excellence, with its up-to-the minute instruction, comprehensive laboratory training, collegiality, and engaged mentoring. Plant pathologist David Langston leads the pathology program at the Tidewater AREC which includes technical staff, research associates, and graduate students. We find that when a population of crop plants is exposed to host-specialized pathogen species or strains, the overall disease severity is smaller in the mixture. Plant pathology (also phytopathology) is the scientific study of plant diseases caused by pathogens (infectious diseases) and environmental conditions. Our exceptional laboratories and equipment serve cutting-edge research. The Department of Plant Pathology has a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to research and training, and make use of the latest technologies in order. Plant Pathology at Kentucky is a vibrant research community. ![]() A defining characteristic is our intense focus on fundamental research, while still keeping “one foot in the furrow” by helping Kentucky’s agricultural community combat plant disease. This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of plant diseases, including pathogens, plant-pathogen interactions, their management. Since its establishment in 1963, our department has gained recognition as one of the leading departments of plant pathology in the country and around the world.
